Let’s end January with a bang! Keep your resolution to be open and more creative with fashion by finding your fashion icon. We’ve pegged this particular style blogger to inspire us to wear our maxi skirts bright!

Style Pantry editor Folake Kuye Huntoon pulls off smart, relaxed, and creative in this outfit we found in Chictopia. It may have been done a couple of years back but something so striking and unlikely just begs to be done again and again!

In her post, Folake Kuye Huntoon mentions that she actually made the sheer blue maxi skirt and even created one in taxi yellow. Then she matched the blue with a red, polka dotted blouse. Genius!

I know what you’re thinking. How many of us actually buy an electric blue maxi skirt? Granted, it’s not the most practical piece but you’ll be surprised how a stand out item in your sea of classics can always be in circulation. If you’re still new at doing the bright on bright style, you can always mix it up with neutrals or tamer hues– until you finally get the hang of it!

Do a Retro Chic Maxi Look Like Rachel Zoe

It’s not everyday that you see such a stylish family on a relaxed day out. But for Rachel Zoe and husband Roger Berman, that’s probably a daily family affair. The celebrity stylist was spotted with her two favorite men, her husband Roger and son Skyler, taking a walk after having lunch at Hugo’s restaurant in Los Angeles.

Rachel looked relaxed and bohemian chic in what looks like a long black maxi dress and short-brimmed straw hat. We say ‘looks like’ because with the slim belt cinched around her waist, it can also be a flowy boho top and a floor-skimming maxi skirt. Genius! To complete the look, she had on platform sandals and a large red cross body bag.

The guys matched her casual affair with denim jeans and blue shirts. Roger’s is plaid while Skyler’s plain one is matched with a khaki cardi. It really is such a gorgeous family!

Mermaid gowns made such a huge splash at the 70th Golden Globe Awards held last January 13, 2013 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. We wouldn’t be surprised if we see them again at the Oscars although it would be pretty difficult to top this glamorous lot of gowns. Below are our favorite mermaid gown appearances on the Golden Globes’ red carpet.

Pop singer/songwriter Taylor Swift looked spectacular, in this burgundy Donna Karan Atelier gown. She even had her signature bangs swept up and tucked away. Break ups never faze her, do they? Unfortunately for her, the two funniest ladies in showbiz were hosting (Tina Fey and Amy Poehler) and her unforgettable moment was when Fey told her to “stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son.”

Hayden may not have bagged the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Nashville, but she is one of our top favorite looks of the night! The petite star flaunted her curves in a white Roberto Cavalli gown which features a sweetheart neckline. She matched it with a punchy pink minaudiere.

The best dressed of the night goes to Amy Adams! She is always dressed to perfection but the actress dazzled us this time! She donned a light pink Marchesa dress which was matched with Tiffany & Co. jewels and a coif that gave her a bit of 1920s glam– love it! Amy was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Master.

If you watched the 70th Golden Globes last night then you must have noticed that the slit is back and it’s higher than ever before! We can’t forget Angelina Jolie’s leg-baring, dark velvet gown she wore at last year’s Oscars ceremony but it would seem that that was just the beginning of what would be the next trend in gowns and long dresses: impressively high slits. I mean, don’t bother calling it a slit if it isn’t high enough to skim the hem of your knickers! Here are our top 5 ladies with the most fantastic high slit gowns at last night’s Golden Globes. 5) Halle Berry in Versace

Halle Berry looked her usual poised and fresh self but weren’t too crazy about the mixed print, purple-pink gown by Versace she had on. Somehow, it feels like Halle has worn a similar thing some time before. The side slit is very high though and Halle pulls it off really well. She was a Bond woman, after all.

4) Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Saint Laurent

The model/actress turned up with boyfriend Jason Statham at the Golden Globes looking stunning in a black Saint Laurent gown with a belted waist and slit that seems as high as she is tall. Unfortunately, the sleekness of the dress makes her neck too long than we would like, especially with that haltered neckline.

3) Heidi Klum in Alexandre Vauthier

Heidi looked every bit of a goddess in the white, floor-sweeping gown by Alexandre Vauthier. On top, the dress features an elaborate mix of gold and metallic bead work. And of course, the model/host managed the extreme side slit really well.

2) Eva Longoria in Emilio Pucci

Probably the highest slit of the night, the black Emilio Pucci gown Eva donned was a showstopping ensemble not just for its slit but its sheer skirt and plunging neckline. Way to show some skin, Eva!

1) Miranda Kerr in Zuhair Murad

Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr stepped out in a burgundy Zuhair Murad gown, husband Orlando Bloom in tow and created the enviable moment when the wind caught her dress and revealed that the gown’s slit bared not just one but two legs! Some would argue that Eva Longoria’s slit was higher but we love how glam and glowing Miranda Kerr looked in her windswept gown.

So what do gorgeous women look like on their days off? Well if you’re Elsa Pataky, then we say you’re still gorgeous! The Spanish model/actress was spotted picking up coffee and pastries at Joan’s in West Hollywood last week, looking exceptionally bohemian chic.

Leave it to Pataky to make a slouchy grey cardigan and a graphic yellow maxi skirt look sexy. It’s not a combination that we think would turn heads, in fact it borders on the bag lady category, but the Fast Five star makes it look amazing, combining it with a V-neck top and a pair of slouchy brown boots.

Carly Rae Jepsen Welcomes the New Year In a Full Red Maxi Skirt

Carly Rae Jepsen celebrated the New Year with a stylish bang in a semi-sheer maxi skirt from Sachin + Babi’s Spring 2013 collection. The Canadian Idol was one of the artists that performed in Times Square in New York last New Year’s Eve and she did so in a fashionable ensemble involving an edgy black top and a red couture skirt.

The full, semi sheer maxi skirt is a striking piece, made with chevron-styled strips laid in staccatos all over the length of the skirt. It’s pretty and while it did sit a little too high on Carly’s waist we thought she pulled it off really well, with the Michael Jackson, Billie Jean black-and-red inspiration, complete with fingerless leather gloves.

Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried Bring Dark and Glamorous Dresses to the New York Premiere of ‘Les Miserables’

It looks like spring/summer 2013 will be all about dark and moody glamour! For the New York premiere of the book-turned-musical-turned-film Les Miserables, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried both donned stunning gowns from the spring summer collections of Tom Ford (Hathaway) and Alexander McQueen (Seyfried) respectively.

Anne’s gown was a billowy black dress which featured a bouffant cape that carried over towards the skirt– perhaps a modern robe à la polonaise? The Tom Ford dress also had a thigh-high slit which revealed an over-the-knee gladiator sandal, also black and in patent leather.

It is a far cry from the white, pearl-studded Givenchy gown she wore to the London premiere. In fact, they’re complete opposites and we wonder if that was Anne’s or her stylist’s (Rachel Zoe, perhaps?) intention.

Amanda Seyfried’s black and gold gown already garnered a hundred and one rave reviews from all over the world. The Alexander McQueen dress featured a brocaded bodice covered in golden flowers and a black, flowy skirt with a slight train. The tortoiseshell belt with golden buckle served as a glamorous separation between the two dramatic parts of the gown.

Again, like the ruffled Balenciaga dress Amanda wore to Les Miserables’ London premiere, this gown was more youthful compared to Anne’s and obviously more appealing to most ladies out there.
